There are two general types of data that will be stored in MetPetDB: Archived (published) and Non-archived (everything else). Access privileges will be different for each.
- Archive data. These are only data that are already in the published literature. Note that published data can include both printed publications, e-journals, and supplemental material deposited with journal publishers
- Public access
- Read-only
- Only system people can edit (to fix errors)
- Non-archive data. These are data uploaded by registered users. The data may be pre-publication, or extra data that didn't make it into publication. The data are owned by the person who uploaded and may be designated as public or private.
- Public (owner is permitting access to these data by anyone)
- Has owner
- Can be corrected by owner or system people
- Everyone else may view data but not modify original data (read only)
- Private (owner retains discretion as to who can view).
- Has owner
- Owner or system people can correct data.
- Has people authorized to view (through project manager)
NB. It is envisioned that data, once uploaded, will not be modified except for corrections to entries. These corrections might include changing an incorrect number (analysis data or lat-long, for example). In some cases it might be necessary to change the list of minerals present (if a mineral was originally misidentified). Additional information may be added for a sample. For example, additional analyses or images may be uploaded for a sample, a new sub-sample may be uploaded, or additional minerals may be added.
